Medan · Parapat · Samosir
Lake Toba is North Sumatra’s most famous sight, but it is a long way from Medan. A private car with driver lets you set your own pace, stop where you like and avoid juggling buses and shuttles.
About the trip
Lake Toba is a vast volcanic lake with Samosir Island at its centre, home to Batak villages, traditional houses and quiet lakeside views. Most visitors from Medan travel to Parapat, a small town on the shore where ferries leave for Samosir. The road passes through Tebing Tinggi and Pematangsiantar, and part of the route now uses toll roads, which has shortened the journey compared with a few years ago. [VERIFIKASI]
With your own car and driver you are not tied to bus timetables. Stop at a tea plantation, take a long lunch, or wait for the sunset over the lake. Your driver helps you judge timings so the plan is not too rushed.
Opening hours and entrance fees at attractions can change, so it is worth checking before you travel.
Bring a light jacket, as evenings around the lake can be cool. During Indonesian and Malaysian school holidays, hotels and ferries get busy, so book early. Have some cash in rupiah for small shops and stalls.
A long day trip, or 2–3 days staying in Parapat or on Samosir.
We help you build a realistic plan for the time you have.
Fuel, tolls, ferry and driver costs are listed clearly.
Pick-up from your hotel, home or Kualanamu Airport.
For long journeys, choose a car with enough legroom and boot space. Larger groups can use a minibus when available.

The price depends on the number of days, the car and the route, for example whether the car crosses to Samosir by ferry.
These are the usual requirements. We confirm the final list when you book.
FAQ
The drive to Parapat usually takes several hours, depending on traffic, the toll sections used and how often you stop. Leave early in the morning if you plan to return the same day.
It is possible, but you will spend much of the day on the road. To enjoy Samosir Island properly, two or three days with an overnight stay is far more relaxing.
