Self-Drive Car Rental in Medan

Comfortable driving in Indonesia and want full freedom? Rent a self-drive car in Medan, bring the right documents, and set your own schedule.

Before you drive

Freedom to explore, with clear rules from the start

Self-drive suits travellers who already drive confidently in Southeast Asia and want flexibility: several meetings in a day, visiting relatives outside the city, or exploring at your own pace. To avoid surprises, we explain the rental period, required documents, any deposit, fuel policy and permitted areas before you confirm. The car is inspected together at handover so we both have the same record.

Driving in Medan: what to expect

  • Left-hand traffic: Indonesia drives on the left, the same as Malaysia and Singapore.
  • Lots of motorbikes: keep a safe distance and expect overtaking on both sides.
  • Peak hours: central Medan gets congested at commuter times, so allow extra time.
  • Tolls are cashless: Indonesian toll roads require a prepaid e-money card, sold at banks and many minimarkets.

If you have not driven on Indonesian roads before, especially mountain routes to Parapat or Berastagi, a car with driver is often the safer and more relaxing choice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What documents do foreign visitors need?

Usually a valid passport, your home country driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP). We confirm the exact list when you book.

Can I use my Malaysian driving licence?

Rules on foreign licences can change, so please check the current requirements before travelling. We will confirm what we accept when you book.

Is there a security deposit?

A deposit may apply depending on the car and rental period. We explain the amount and how it is refunded before you pay anything.

Can I drive to Lake Toba myself?

Tell us your plans when booking so we can confirm the terms. Mountain roads can be challenging if you are not used to them, so many visitors choose a car with driver for that trip.

What happens if the car breaks down?

Contact us immediately on WhatsApp or by phone. Please do not take the car to a workshop without speaking to us first.
